Turner Classic Movies has a big glossy insert in Vanity Fair (also dead to me, see previous post) promoting “31 Days of Oscar,” featuring trivia questions about Oscar-winning movies. Question #7:
“Producer Hal B. Wallis nearly made which character in Casablanca a female, considering Lena Horne and Ella Fitzgerald for the role?”
Well, duh. Sam of course. In case you’re an idiot they even provide a hint: “You must remember this, a kiss is still a kiss, a sigh is just a sigh. The fundamental things apply as time goes by.” Double duh.
The answer is in teensy print at the bottom of the page: “Sam (played in the film by Louis Armstrong)”
What the effing effing eff? Louis Armstrong? Seriously? One of the most iconic roles of all time in a true movie classic. Louis freaking Armstrong? TCM, have you ever SEEN Casablanca? TCM, you are dead to me.
